2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their visibility has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming appears especially powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.
Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.
Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
