Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Fans

The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

Historical Context for Owner Penalties

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.

Recent Controversies and Public Spotlight

The incident comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its modern-era championship drought.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing effort to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
