On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
